12 years ago, in 2008, Britney's estate was put under a conservatorship which was supposed to last only one year. The new court hearing on June 23rd, 2021, revealed the atrocities the singer needs to endure. What has happened in the middle? Watch the video below to learn the whole timeline story of the most commented judicial dispute of the decade!
1. 2007-2008: Mental breakdown
Britney started having some kind of troubles when she was in public. The megastar drove with her son on her lap in the front seat, 28-year-old mother shaved her head, and she 'defended' herself against a paparazzo using a green umbrella. In 2008, the pop hit maker went willingly to a psychiatric hospital to recover. The blonde star wanted to get better for herself and for her children! Well done Brit!
2. 2008: Conservatorship is established
As for Los Angeles Times, Spears' conservatorship was established upon Jamie, her dad, request. He got to have all the power to decide over her daughter's finances, estate, health issues, who could see her, which deal to close, which stage could she appear on. Jamie became the one to decide over absolutely everything regarding Britney's life for a 'time' until she got better.
3. 2009: #FreeBritney movement is created
Some of her fans started questioning about the need of her conservatorship. Many fans kept on arguing about the need of her legal issues since although the star kept on performing on tour all around the globe, and attending many TV programs she could actually decide over nothing in her whole life. Fans also create the website FreeBritney.net to support the singer. The conservatorship is not only for music matters since she had to ask for permission before leaving her own home and ask for money and give explanations on what she was spending it on.
4. 2019: James wants more
Jamie Spears asked the judge to expand the conservatorship to three more states: Florida, Louisiana and Hawaii. The same year was a difficult one for Britney's father since he was accused of abusing her son Sean when trying to get the kid by force. The 'Oops I did it again' singer used that to inform the court she was not paying any more visits to her father since she was scared of what he could do. Because of what happened, who had her full conservatorship stepped aside and let Jodi Montgomery as her conservator temporarily!
5. April 2019: Britney stays in a mental health facility for 1 month
The star was taking some time to revoke herself, not thinking about her career nor tours. Britney has been on an 'indefinite work hiatus' since January 2019 and nobody knows still when she will resume her career.
6. July 2020: Bryan Spears' statement
His words came clear stating that everyone in the whole family, including her father Jamie, have done things the best they could. It has clearly been quite a difficult time for all of them, but, they all did things in Britney's best interest. The siblings are supposed to speak frequently and Bryan affirmed his sister really wants out her conservatorship. The pop singer brother confirmed it is very frustrating for his sister to be always asking what to do or not to do, but, he is sure it is for her own sake.
7. September 2020: Disclosing data
Britney filed a request to hold the hearing and all the information open and available for the public. Her kids are no babies anymore and there is no information about them, so, the mother of two wants people to really understand what is going on and why she wants her conservatorship to end since she is capable and fit now. Justin Timberlake's ex-girlfirend wants her father out for good and the replacements she proposes is Jodi, she wants Montgomery to remain as his conservator in a permanent way.
Parents dispute. While Lynne Spears thinks Britney should take over what is hers, James is struggling to extend (again) the conservatorship.
Her mother thinks her daughter should have a 'care plan' to help in the transition, but her father is 100% sure that won't help her daughter since, in his opinion, she needs a long term monitoring.
8. November 2020: Britney's request was declined
In a closed hearing, the judge didn't remove James as her co-conservator. The star's lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, told the judge his client was not going to perform until her dad is totally removed from her legal affairs.
9. December 16th, 2020
James and Lynne Spears were present in the remote hearing with Britney's attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III. The LA judge decided to wait until 2021 and leave the star's conservatorship as is for the moment. Meaning: Jodi is the conservator at least for two more months.
10. February 2021
Judge ruled against Britney's petition of revoking her father from her conservatorship, but agreed in a team in conjunction with those designated by the singer.
11. June 23rd 2021: "I just want my life back"
"I haven't been back to court in a long time because I don't think I was heard on any level when I came to court the last time."
She revealed details of her conservatorship and the treatments she received during these years, for example a lithium treatment, attend therapy sessions against her will and using a DIU birth control.
As a consequence of her medical treatments, she can't sleep and has anxiety and depression.
"now I'm telling you the truth, OK. I'm not happy. I can't sleep. I'm so angry it's insane and i'm depressed.""
She also revealed that she wants to have more kids (she has two young boys, Sean Preston and Jayden James, with Kevin Federline)
I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby, but this so-called team won't let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don't want me to have children, any more children."
As a conclusion, she said that the conservatorship is doing more harm than good because she worked her whole life in order to have a future and now it's being controlled by her father.
"I'm tired of feeling alone. I deserve to have the same rights as anybody."
After that, the court scheduled a new appointment for July 14th, 2021. Let's see what happens!
12. June 25th 2021
On June 25th,2021, the singer posted a new Instagram picture apologizing for "pretending to be ok" and thanked her fans for standing next to her. She posted a picture quoting Albert Einstein, in an emotional post.
13. July 1st, 2021: Judge denial
Once again, the judge denied Britney's request to remove James Spears, her father, from the conservatorship. Spears attorney, Samuel Ingham III tried once again without success to end the conservatorship. The Los Angeles Superior Court filed
“The conservator’s request to suspend James P. Spears immediately upon the appointment of Bessemer Trust Company of California as sole conservator of estate is denied without prejudice,”
Britney doesn't look very stressed for this legal setback, because she is already used to this type of denial. She is currently enjoying holidays in Hawaii with her boyfriend, Sam Asghari.
14 July 2021: her own lawyer
Britney won the right to choose her own lawyer. Finally, a new step towards her freedom.
18 July 2021: She quits performances
In an Instagram post, the singer revealed she will not perform anytime soon. Britney also addressed her haters and asked them to leave her alone:
"For those of you who choose to criticize my dancing videos ... look I'm not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think!!!!"
She revealed that in the last decade, she wasn't allowed to change anything from her shows and couldn't also compose any new songs of her liking.
In her long caption, the artist commented that she will keep sharing dancing videos
"I'd much rather share videos YES from my living room instead of onstage in Vegas where some people were so far gone they couldn't even shake my hand and I ended up getting a contact high from weed all the time"
This conservatorship killed my dreams ... so all I have is hope and hope is the only thing in this world that is very hard to kill ... yet people still try !!!
12 August 2021: Britney Spears' father finally steps down from conservatorship. Britney wins!
The #FreeBritney movement has finally paid off. James Spears, Britney's dad has finally agreed to leave her daughter alone after controlling her life and money for over 13 years.
Her attorney Matthew Rosengart revealed that James stepped willingly down because he didn't want to fight anymore with his daughter and being in the public eye gave him sleepless nights.
“It is vindication for Britney.”
Britney wanted to have a life. And here it is. Cheers to new beginnings, Britney!
