"The Meaning of Mariah Carey" has just been launched as an audiobook. Inspired by her own experiences, the “Always Be My Baby” chanteuse wants to encourage more women to write their own songs and start performing. Mariah doesn't think that a lack of talent is what holds back women from success in the music industry.
Iconic legendary star Whitney Houston is an amazing example of an inspirational artist who could have written her own material and excelled as a songwriter. She only needed some encouragement.
Mariah has struggled with her identity since she was a kid. Life was difficult from a young age because of being a mixed-race artist in the music industry.
Talking about her self-titled first album, “Mariah Carey” the artist said.
"When I released my first album, I’m like, ‘Well what did they expect me to do,’ like unless I had a sticker that said 'I’m black' on my forehead on the album cover people did not know how to perceive.”
She added “People are confused by the ambiguity of how I look and have always looked. So to me that was already saying I’m black because I said my father's black, that makes you black, but to be black and mixed and ambiguous looking is a very interesting road, particularly when you're in the industry."
The “Vision of Love” hitmaker used to talk her fans directly in the days before social media. Mariah recalls a tough time when she was hospitalised in 2001 after suffering from an emotional breakdown, following extreme exhaustion caused by the incredible pressures of her career. The singer felt so desperate that she was posting voice notes and messages to her website. She really needed to keep in contact with fans directly. She later revealed that she was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder.
Before social media it was very unusual that a star keep in contact with fans. She always had a special connection with them. She even used to phone them, people were saying.
“Oh, my God, why is she calling her fans directly? They didn't understand, we had already been doing that. Me and my fans had already been back and forth with me leaving messages on my website and them responding.”
Congratulations, Mariah, you truly are a beautiful human being who knows what’s important in life.
