Are you up for something original and fun to read? SM Entertainment's boy group NCT currently has 23 members and 4 subunits: NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream and WayV. Each subunit has different member combinations. NCT's concept since their debut has been an unlimited number of members and subunits, meaning that new members keep being added to the group. Confused? Keep reading to find out how exactly the NCT system works, we made a beginner's guide to this amazing group!
What is NCT?
NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology, which is essentially the boy band's concept. The NCT project's main aim is to make region-specific K-pop groups across the world. This means that different members and subunits keep being added to the group. NCT fans are called NCTzens, or more affectionately, Czennies.
NCT U stands for NCT United. Any of the 23 members can come together under NCT U to release songs. Different members sing different NCT U songs. This was the first NCT unit to debut, on 9th April 2016, with two songs. Members Taeyong, Mark, Jaehyun, Doyoung and Ten performed 'The 7th Sense' and Taeil, Doyoung and Jaehyun sang 'Without You'. Kun also took part in 'Without You' (Chinese Version).
NCT 127 is the first region-specific NCT unit. 127 represents the longitude coordinate of South Korea's capital city, Seoul. This means that NCT 127 is NCT's Korea-based unit. They debuted on 7th July 2016 with the song 'Fire Truck'. They are a 10 member group and Taeil, Taeyong, Mark, Jaehyun, Yuta, Doyoung, Johnny, Winwin, Jungwoo and Haechan are part of the unit's lineup.
This unit originally was a teenage-only unit! The members, Mark, Haechan, Jaemin, Jeno, Renjun, Chenle and Jisung, were the youngest in NCT when they debuted on 25th August 2016. Their average age was only 15.6 years old! Their debut song ‘Chewing Gum’ had an innocent, youthful vibe. Originally, Dream members were supposed to ‘graduate’ from the group when they became 19 and member Mark did in fact graduate. They became extremely popular though and fans became too attached to the seven members. So in 2020, they were rebranded because the members had become adults, Mark was added back, and NCT Dream became a fixed unit.
After a lot of rumors and anticipation, WayV debuted on 17th January 2019 as NCT’s China-based unit with their album ‘Awaken the World’. Since the unit’s name is different from the rest of NCT, the name of WayV’s fans is also different. They are called WayZenni (similar to NCTzens’ nickname Czennie). WayV’s seven members are Kun, Ten, Lucas, WinWin who were already a part of NCT, and Xiaojun, Hendery and Yangyang, who were new members.
In 2018, the then 18 members and 3 subunits (U, 127 and Dream) came together to release NCT’s first album, NCT 2018 Empathy. It was the first album to officially introduce members Kun, Jungwoo and Lucas. Songs like NCT U’s ‘BOSS’ and ‘Baby Don’t Stop’ became immensely popular. All 18 members also performed the song ‘Black on Black’ together and were praised for their flawless and synchronized performance.
NCT 2020 Resonance Pt.1 and Pt.2 are the two parts of NCT’s second album. The current 23 members and 4 subunits collaborated on this album. Members Shotaro and Sungchan debuted with Resonance. Trending songs included NCT U’s ‘Make a Wish’, ‘From Home’ and ‘90’s Love’.
Early in May, it was announced that SM Entertainment has partnered with MGM Worldwide Television Network to create a survival audition show. The contestants on this program would be American males between the ages of 13 to 25 who would compete to debut as NCT’s new US-based group, NCT Hollywood. Fans are looking forward to more details about this survival show and unit.
