‘Snowdrop’ is one of the most highly anticipated dramas of 2021. Starring Blackpink’s Jisoo and South Korean actor Jung Hae-In, fans are super excited to see their pairing on-screen. However, on March 27th, 2021, Korean fans expressed their disappointment in the idol-actress. Read more below to see 2 reasons why Jisoo got backlash.
1. The drama spreads misinformation about Korean history
On 27th March 2021, Korean netizens speculated the plot of ‘Snowdrop’. They assumed that the drama was showing North Koreans as spies. It highlighted a negative image of South Korean protestors in the 80s.
‘JTBC’ debunked this information as false and revealed that the drama will have a funny melodramatic theme. Even after the statement, Jisoo continued to receive hate comments. Do you think that’s fair?
2. The name of Jisoo’s character ‘Eun Young-Cho’
On March 31st, 2021, JTBC revealed that they will change the name of Jisoo’s character. Previously, her character was named ‘Eun Young-Cho’ which received criticism as it was the name of the representative of female student protestors in 1987.
Korean netizens signed petitions to cancel the drama. Read more about it here. To avoid confusion, the channel cleared that the character in the drama had no link with the historical figure. I hope people can stop being negative towards the singer now!
Conclusion
Even after multiple clarification statements, Korean netizens are still upset at Jisoo taking the role. They don't want the history of their country to be spread wrongly. I hope that the controversy will calm down and the drama will air as announced in June 2021.
