Did you know that Red Velvet’s tracks follow a group concept of duality? Songs like ‘Icecream Cake’ and ‘Russian Roulette’ are part of the cheerful and bright ‘Red’ category. ‘Velvet’, on the other hand, is the dark and mysterious side which includes tracks like ‘Psycho’ and ‘Monster’. Want to know more interesting details about the band? Keep reading to found out!
1) They were initially a 4 member group
Red Velvet debuted in August 2014 with the track ‘Happiness’. Their original lineup included Irene, Wendy, Seulgi, and Joy. The fifth member ‘Yeri’ had been training with SM entertainment since 2011. She was also part of the SM rookies pre-debut group which performed at the SM Town Live World Tour IV in 2014. Yeri officially made her debut in the ‘Icecream Cake’ music video, released in March 2015.
2) Irene and Seulgi's pre-debut activities
Like Aespa’s Karina, Irene and Seulgi had also been part of several projects before their debut. They appeared together in the music videos ‘1-4-3 (I Love You)’ in 2013 and ‘Fantastic’ in July 2014 alongside label-mate Henry Lau. Seulgi also collaborated with Henry on his song ‘Butterfly’ in 2014.
3. The 8 year age difference between Yeri and Irene
This one was the most surprising one for us. K-pop groups rarely have large age gaps between members but Red Velvet breaks this norm. Kim Yerim, the youngest in the band, was born on March 5th, 1999. This means that she was only 15 years old when she debuted! The leader Irene, was 23 at debut as her birthday is on March 29th, 1991. The age gap between the other members is not that large though. Seulgi and Wendy were born in February 1994 while Joy’s birthday is in 1996.
