TikTok-gate: the app has announced they will leave Hong Kong

The Yaay redaction team has been covering TikTok news for a while now, and new drama has come out to light. The social network announced they are leaving Hong Kong amid the espionage scandal. Check what happened below

  • India has banned the app and many other Chinese based software like WeChat and other 60 apps because they ensure they are used to "steal and transmit data to the Chinese Government". 
  • The app, owned by Byte Dance, is leaving the city after Beijing (the capital) authorities passed a security law that makes it an obligation to cooperate with the government concerning certain information that it was confidential before.
  • Other firms like Facebook are also suspending the accounts for the city of Hong Kong, a former British colony. 

TikTok's communication responsible stated: "In light of recent events, we have decided to halt operations of the TikTok app in Hong Kong" informed the agency Reuters.  T

TikTok offices are shutting down around the world

The company is run by a former Walt Disney Director called Kevin Mayer. Mike Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State announced that the app could be banned also in the United States. Millions of dollars are already being lost because India was the principal market of the app and new episodes may suggest that we are seeing the end of this app that has become a world-wide trend.
