Fans have gathered on social media with one goal: set the pop icon free from her guardianship. The music star has been under a conservatorship since 2008. Watch the video for a full explanation of Spears' timeline.
A conservatorship is when a court agrees a person can't make their own decisions, and they are appointed a legal guardian, in Britney's case her father, whom she doesn't get along with and a lawyer. Spears has no control over her assets or career negotiations. During quarantine Spears has been busy posting a lot of TikTok videos and photos and fans are saying the star is sending out secret messages asking for their help.
Just a week ago Spears posted a video on Instagram with a flower arrangement and walked in and out of frame. Fans say it's a cry for help. Another post read: "She wore flowers in her hair and carried magic secrets in her eyes." Truth be told, the singer has been posting a lot of photos of flowers. Fans are determined to set her free and argue that if she wasn't capable of making her own decisions she shouldn't have appeared on television series "How I met your mother" or been able to receive the MTV Video Music Awards in 2011.
More than 134,000 fans have already signed a petition asking for Britney to be able to hire her own lawyer. However, in 2019 the attorney she was appointed commented last year saying the star is part of the "decision-making and has a say over the career choices she makes".
In 2019 Britney checked into a mental health facility and weeks after she wrote on Instagram: "don't believe everything you read and hear". "Your love and dedication is amazing,” she wrote, "but what I need right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way." Then again on June 22 the star posted a video where she captioned "PS don’t believe everything you read, hear, or see ….. follow your heart …. remain open to change and educate yourself"
