"The Rock" is former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson's ring name. The actor and producer is the head of the group that is buying the professional American football league (XFL). Read more about it!
Johnson is teaming up with his ex-wife, bodybuilder Dany Garcia, who is also his partner and manager. The couple married in 1997 and divorced 10 years later. In 2008 Garcia started managing her ex-husband and in 2012 they co-founded Seven Bucks Productions, which has produced several of Johnson's films.
Now they are pairing up again together with RedBird Capital, a sports management company to purchase the bankrupt XFL football league for $15 million.
The XFL was founded by WWE as an alternative to the NFL. The group with "The Rock" as its head is purchasing the assets from Alpha Entertainment, which fled for bankruptcy in April. The XFL was also cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. 2020 was meant to be the XFL's great return after only playing one season in 2001.
Johnson said his reasons for wanting to buy the XFL are "...my passion for the game and my desire to always take care of the fans" He wants to create something special for the players and fans, "and everyone involved for the love of football."
On August 7th a hearing will be held by a bankruptcy court in order to approve the deal. If that happens, the purchase should be completed by the end of the month.
