The FBI launches an investigation regarding Twitter-gate

After the cyberattack on the most important Twitter accounts in the world, the FBI has launched an investigation because this could be a national security threat. Companies like Uber, Apple and Tesla to their CEO’s personal accounts including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and other celebrities like Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West and former United States President, Barack Obama have been hacked.

  • The trick was to lure people into paying bitcoins to an account where supposedly, these celebrities would double the money in donations.
  • Twitter stock fell almost 4% after the attack and the accounts were suspended.
  • Authorities managed to realize the attack was done to an internal panel of the company, similarly of what happened in 2017 when a Twitter employee deleted Donald Trump’s account on his last day working for the tech giant.
  • Companies like Uber, Apple and Tesla to their CEO’s personal accounts including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and other celebrities like Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West and former United States President, Barack Obama have been hacked.

The greatest attack on the preferred social media of the United States President, Donald Trump, could pose a national security threat.

Hacked accounts

Many government agencies use Twitter to inform the citizens with updates and news. One of the theories managed until now, is that a high-ranking Twitter employee gave the hackers access to the tools.

Neil Jenkins, director for the Cyber Threat Alliance told the media "Social media platforms are a key player to the functioning of our country". New York Attorney General Letitia James opened a case concerning Twitter and asked for more transparency because otherwise it could "harm public debate".
