Russia is accused of testing a satellite weapon in space

The UK and US are accusing Russia of firing a satellite weapon into space that threatens the peaceful use of it. More information in the article below!

  • The UK, US, Russia and China are among the nations who have committed to a space treaty that states outer space "is to be explored by all and purely for peaceful purposes".
  • The treaty says weapons shouldn't be placed in orbit.
  • The US military had already warned Russia in February about two satellites that were orbiting close to an American one.

The US described the "testing" as an anti-satellite weapon. This is not the first time the US has raised concerns about Russian satellite activity. It is, however, the UK's first time and coincidentally it comes after a Russian report said the UK government "badly underestimated" the country's threat

US Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-proliferation, Christopher Ford, said "Moscow aims to restrict the capabilities of the United States while clearly having no intention of halting its own counter-space program".

The head of the UK's space directorate, Air Vice Marshal Harvey Smyth, urged Russia to be responsible and avoid further testing.

Russian Defense Ministry said they were testing new technology "to perform checks on Russian space equipment"
