West announced in a post shared on all of her social media accounts that she’s freezing her activity on Instagram to protest against Facebook.
She said that the social media company failed to eradicate hate speech and misinformation. The photo she shared had "Stop Hate" written all over it with a hashtag #StopHateForProfit.
The actress wrote “I cannot sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation.” She further added that the purpose of this is to “sow division and split America apart — only to take steps after people are killed.” She said that the misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on elections and undermines democracy.
This comes after Facebook failed to take action against Kenosha militia page despite being reported prior to the protest which resulted in the killing of 2 protesters. Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged the mistake in a video posted by him.
Back in July, many companies including Adidas, Reebok, Starbucks and Upwork decided to pause advertisement on the Facebook to condemn the spread of hatred.
Many celebrities like Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Jennifer Lawrence, Lionardo DiCaprio and several others have joined the protest. We are happy to see stars using their platforms with millions of followers to pull away any negativity and propaganda going on against the nation. We hope their efforts are worth it and the social sites take action against the hostility soon.
