Air India plane crash leaves at least 17 dead

The flight came from Dubai. It was landing at Kozhikode International Airport in Calicut, located in the state of Kerala in India when it slid and crashed. More on the incident below.

  • Air India Express reported in a statement that there were 174 passengers, 10 infants, 2 pilots and 4 cabin crew members on board.
  • The express flight was a repatriation operation by the government to bring Indians home amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Friday morning, August 7th a plane crashed in India leaving at least 17 people dead and over a hundred more injured. In addition, 173 were hospitalized, according to a Reuters report that cited the office of the chief minister of Kerala state.

Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s Union Minister for Civil Aviation, tweeted an update of the situation around 3pm on Friday.

Apparently the plane had tried to land once but was unsuccessful. On the second try it split in two. One of the casualties was Capt Deepak V Sathe, the pilot of Air India.

The crash has been the worst passenger aircraft accident in India since 2010, when another Air India express flight crashed while landing. The 2010 flight was also from Dubai.
